Eighth SWAS Public Data Release

The eighth SWAS public data release consists of a complete set of SWAS data from mission day 0049 (the first day of usable science data) to mission day 1509. The SWAS mission defines mission day 0001 as November 01, 1998.

Plot Files In the Eighth Release

The SWAS service provides a link to a "5-panel plot", generated by SWAS operation center. In JPEG-format, the "5-panel plot" shows a cummulative (grand) spectral co-addition for the nominal center position (offsets of 0'', 0'' in RA and Dec) of the target. In a few cases a non-zero offset position was used due to the lack of data at the nominal center position. The plot includes informative statistics: target position, offsets, local velocity as measured with [CI], and integration time per spectral channel.

New Issues with Data Files in the Eighth Release

The eighth data release was delayed after we discovered a bug in the data processing pipeline software where the leap year correction for the year 2000 was not properly taken into account. For SWAS mission days after February 28, 2000, the translation from running mission day to emphemeris dates was off by one day. The primary effect of this bug was incorrect velocity corrections for solar system targets. For most solar system objects observed by SWAS (and all fixed targets), an error of one day results in an insignificant difference in the velocity corrections. However, for three comets, the day-to-day changes in velocity were large enough to warrant reprocessing of the data in the corrected pipeline software and to re-release these data to the public.

Previosuly Established Issues with Data Files:
  • (a) As was pointed out by the folks at the IRSA for the 3rd public data release, there seems to be a problem with duplicate entries in the FITS-format archive where individual positions of several sources appear to have duplicate, identical grand co-adds for each spectra line (in other words, the line spectra are 725x2 in dimension instead of 725x1). This appears to be an IRAF problem. The SWAS-Science Operations Center (SWAS-SOC) will try to correct this problem in the final archive release for the mission which will occur in September 2004.

  •
  • (b) Since public data release three, the SWAS Science Operations Center has chosen not to provide FITS-format, grand co-add files for moving and/or time-variable targets. Such a grand co-add would be misleading and confusing to archive users. The SWAS SOC recommends that archive users work with the Class-format files for these targets.
